Our History

Youth Safety Awareness Initiative popularly known by its brand name, Crime Si Poa® (Kiswahili for “crime is not cool”) is a non-profit organisation that mobilizes communities to build ownership around community justice, safety, and socio-economic issues.

It was founded in 2007 in response to the alarming rate of youth crime and incarceration in Kenya by Peter Ouko, the current Executive Director, who was wrongfully convicted and served 18 years on the death row of Kamiti Maximum Security Prison

Formally registered as an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) in 2010, the organization started its formal operations in 2018 after Peter’s release.

Since then, the organisation has made noteworthy progress, currently running impactful activities in 22 prisons, 27 schools and communities spread across 10 major counties in Kenya.

The organization continues to build proximate and ethical youth leadership and amplifying young people’s voices.

Our Safeguarding Policy

Crime Si Poa® works in the best interest of children and as such recognizes the right of all children to be protected from all forms of abuse and harm.

Our Safeguarding Policy is informed by local and international instruments, namely, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) of 1989, The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of Children of 1990, The Constitution of Kenya 2010, Sexual Offences Act 2006 and Kenya’s Children Act No. 8 of 2001.

Crime Si Poa® approach includes promoting awareness on child protection as we work closely with teachers, social workers, community leaders and law enforcement agencies to address any threats, or incidences of child abuse that comes to our attention.

The Crime Si Poa® Safeguarding Policy is regularly reviewed and updated to be in sync with the latest development in laws governing children in the country.
