Reaching beyond the shadow of past mistakes and grasping onto a new narrative of hope and accountability.
Sitting in those sessions, the lessons began to mirror the chaotic inner battles I had fought for years. This sparked an unexpected realization that my past mistakes did not have to dictate the rest of my story, showing me that even in confinement, I possessed the power to make a positive difference. This internal shift was noticed by the program organizers, who selected me to advance into the Trainer of Trainees (ToT) program. This specialized track fundamentally shifted my perspective from a man merely serving time to a mentor equipped with the leadership tools necessary to uplift the broader prison community.
Armed with these new skills, I stepped into the role of a peacemaker within the cellblocks, actively mediating volatile interpersonal disputes that could have easily broken down into violence or further systemic punishment. By relying heavily on alternative dispute resolution, I have been able to help defuse tensions and restore fragile harmony to our crowded cells and communal spaces. Beyond calming immediate conflicts, I have dedicated myself to serving as a vital emotional anchor; incarceration is an incredibly isolating, lonely experience where men routinely suffer in absolute silence. My training taught me how to truly listen, offer deep empathy, and walk alongside others as they build emotional resilience and find healing.
This human-centered approach naturally extended into my parallel work as a legal case worker and paralegal with Justice Defenders. In this role, I intentionally merge formal legal guidance with restorative justice techniques, allowing inmates and their complainants to seek mutual reconciliation and closure far outside the rigid, adversarial confines of a traditional courtroom.
The quiet revolution sparked by Crime Si Poa inside Murang’a Main Prison is visible every single day. Those of us who transformed through training have stepped up as role models and mentors, creating an environment that is genuinely safer, less violent, and deeply focused on personal transformation rather than just raw punishment. It is my profound conviction that this program is not an optional luxury but an absolute lifeline that must be expanded to every correctional facility in the country to give justice-involved individuals a real chance at successful reintegration into society.
Through this journey, my entire identity has been rewritten. I am no longer defined by a prison number or a criminal record, but by my capacity to heal, lead, and create peace. I entered these prison gates broken by a judicial conviction, but today I stand tall with a different kind of conviction: an unshakeable belief that any human life can change, and that the very walls meant to confine us can become the foundation upon which we rise.
